What is CBT and how can it help?

CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. It is a form of talking therapy that can be very effective for a number of issues - including anxiety, panic attacks and depression. It does this by helping you to change the way you think and behave.

How does CBT work?

CBT works on the basis that your thoughts, attitudes and beliefs are connected, and that they affect the way you feel and behave.

We can get stuck in negative cycles of thinking, feeling and behaving. However, with CBT we can learn to recognise these unhelpful patterns and begin to replace them with more helpful ones.

It is a very practical form of therapy that helps you to improve your state of mind day-by-day.

What is CBT good for?

CBT has been shown to be an effective way to treat a wide range of conditions. These include helping bring relief from physical as well as mental health issues:

  • anxiety

  • panic attacks

  • stress disorders

  • depression

  • sleep disorder

  • unhelpful habits

  • long term-health issues, such as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), chronic fatige syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia, and post viral fatigue.

he NHS website says that CBT “can be as effective as medicine in treating some mental health problems”.

I have written several Blogs about CBT for Sheffield Wellness Centre (SWC), where I am an Associate Therapist.
